Why Bali
Bali, the land of the Gods
In the legend of Bali's formation, the island was initially connected to Java. A Brahmin named Sidi Mantra received treasures and a wife from the Gods, and they had a son named Manik Angkeran. Despite his talents, Manik Angkeran developed a gambling problem and lost everything. Seeking help, Sidi Mantra prayed to the Gods, who revealed a treasure guarded by the Naga Besukih Dragon on Mount Agung. He obtained the treasure and gave it to his son, hoping to change his ways. However, Manik Angkeran's greed led him to steal from his father and encounter the dragon himself.
When Manik Angkeran tried to take more treasure, he harmed the dragon, resulting in his own death. Sidi Mantra pleaded with the Naga Besukih to revive his son, promising to restore the dragon's tail. The dragon granted his request, and Manik Angkeran returned to life, remorseful for his actions. Sidi Mantra decided they should part ways, and as he disappeared, a spring emerged, growing into the sea, creating Bali as a small island. Thus, according to the legend, Bali became a separate island from Java.
